EBRD supports PKN ORLEN’s investments in environmental protection and power generation

22-06-2011  |  Investments  |

Today, PKN ORLEN and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed an agreement for a EUR 250m loan to be used by PKN Orlen to finance environmental protection projects and improve the energy efficiency of the CHP plant in Płock. The planned investments are expected to reduce compounds emissions from the CHP plant by 90%. The financing will be available until 2018.

The funding provided by the EBRD will enable PKN ORLEN to finance major projects aimed at aligning the CHP plant of the Płock Plant with the EU standards set for 2016. In addition to benefiting the natural environment, the planned projects will increase the power generation capacity by 20% and the CHP plant’s thermal capacity by 7%.

“Modern business is not only about maximising profits. What also matters are efforts designed to improve a broadly understood quality of life,” said Jacek Krawiec, President of PKN ORLEN’s Management Board. “At PKN ORLEN, we view the fulfilment of environmental protection requirements not only from the perspective of capital expenditure that needs to be incurred – we also note and appreciate the benefits of higher efficiency and balancing of the company’s energy needs. The funds granted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will enable us to invest in the best environmental solutions and quickly join the elite group of low-emission plants,” Mr Krawiec added.

PKN ORLEN launched the Programme of Environmental and Power Investment Projects at the Płock Plant last year. Over the next seven years, PKN ORLEN will implement six projects. Through the use of state-of-the-art solutions, the Płock Plant will achieve an approximately 90% reduction in compounds emissions from the CHP Plant. Completion of all the projects will help reduce emissions of dust, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen compounds from the plant. The projects will also enable PKN ORLEN to use various low-quality soft asphalt and oil fractions, also with high sulphur content, for power generation purposes. The use of such technologies is highly cost-effective and guarantees much lower – compared with current levels – gas and dust emissions.
