ORLEN initiates discussion on innovativeness of Polish companies

07-09-2011  |     |

As the organiser of the panel discussion entitled “Innovation – the source or consequence of development of Polish and European economy”, PKN ORLEN has invited distinguished experts and business leaders to share their knowledge. The debate will be held on the second day of the Economic Forum in Krynica Zdrój, on September 8th.

The key theme of the 21st Economic Forum is “European Dilemmas: Partnership or Rivalry?” The event will take place on September 7th–9th and will host more than 1,700 leaders of the economic, political, social and cultural life from Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East. The panel discussions will aim to explore the question how to attain the position of leader in a short period of time, remaining actively supportive of those who need help the most.

The discussion panel entitled “Innovation – the source or consequence of development of Polish and European economy”, prepared by PKN ORLEN as part of the Forum, will be attended by prominent experts and business leaders, including Marcus Berret – Partner, Automotive Competence Center, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki – Chairman of the Economic Council of the Prime Minister, Michał Boni – Head of the Board of Strategic Advisors to Prime Minister, Keyl Hodenfield – Vice-President, Unconventional Resources, Schlumberger, and Jacek Krawiec – President of the Management Board of PKN ORLEN. The discussion will be led by Witold Jankowski – Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Business Review Polska.

The participants will attempt to identify areas in which companies need to be innovative in the post-crisis environment. Innovation is usually understood as high technologies, operating systems or research and development investment. But in business you can be innovative in many different ways. The guests will discuss the role of the European Union in establishing policies and instruments stimulating the development of the European economy's innovative potential, the strategies and activities of the state designed to promote the innovativeness of Polish economy, as well as the place of innovation and R&D investment in a company’s business strategy.

The panel is being organised as part of PKN ORLEN’s project „Future Fuelled by Knowledge”, whose objective is to stimulate discussion on themes strategically important to the European and global economy. The project is being run through a series of conferences, panel discussions and publications.

The organisers of this year’s Forum believe that the future of Europe and the European Union will depend mainly on the outcome of the debate on common economic policy and the mechanism for its coordination. Equally important will be the future scheme of distribution of financial resources adopted by the EU for the years 2014–2020. If EU opts for partnership, activities aimed to close fast the civilisational divide and support for less developed regions, it will move towards achieving the position of the world leader at a much slower pace.

Within the framework of the 21st Economic Forum in Krynica, representatives of PKN ORLEN will also participate in panel discussions entitled “The role of capital markets in financing businesses” and “Excise duty on energy and competitiveness of Polish industry”.
