…a little bit of history
||In 2002, PKN ORLEN, together with the town of Płock and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched the “Forum for Płock” Cross-Sector Partnership project. Under the initiative the UNDP was responsible for consultancy and coordination of |
cooperation as well as for ensuring that due consideration is given to sustainable development principles in the creation of the town’s strategy.
The objective of the project was to develop a sustainable development strategy for the town through the audit of the “Sustainable Development Strategy of the Town of Płock until 2012” which formed the basis for a detailed evaluation of the town’s standing.
The next step was the creation of the “Forum for Płock”, an informal body consisting of representatives of NGOs, private sector and public administration interested in implementing the town’s development strategy. For eight months the representatives of over 50 entities worked on updating the strategy, which was finally adopted by Resolution of the Town Council of Płock.
The “Forum for Płock” initiative was the first, on such a big scale, agreement between representatives of three sectors, based on the public-private partnership formula. It created opportunities for the partners to engage in planning, supporting and monitoring of the development of the town of Płock.
Our engagement in the “Forum For Płock” reflected mainly our new vision of the Company, which combines its long-term development plans with the creation of good relations with local communities, environmental protection activities, and care for its employees.
|| 2003 saw the creation of the Grant Fund for Płock – a mechanism for the co-financing of activities undertaken by the social organisations of Płock to implement the objectives of the sustainable development strategy for Płock. It supported civic |
initiatives, stimulated the activities of entities with limited funds and increased social involvement.
The launch of the Grant Fund was a totally new, revolutionary method of providing an effective support for the local communities. Moreover, it created opportunities for investing in activities selected on the basis of wide-ranging community consultations. The Grant Fund was the most spectacular and tangible effect of the “Forum for Płock” project.
In 2003–2005, the funds raised from the town of Płock, PKN ORLEN and Levi Strauss during the three editions of the Fund were transformed into grants with the total value of more than PLN 2 million, allocated to finance various projects, including in particular:P>
- Increase of the education level
- Improvement of the public safety
- Care for cultural heritage
- Raising of ecological awareness
- Enhancement of the living conditions in the town and its attractiveness.
The abovementioned activities are continued by the Grant Fund for the Town of Płock Foundation, established in 2005 and co-founded by PKN Orlen.
The initiatives supported by the Foundation include projects aimed at increasing the level of education among the inhabitants of Płock, preventing social and economic exclusion, improving security, as well as better health promotion and protection.
|| In 2004, we signed an agreement on the implementation of the “Development of Cross-Sector Partnership in Poland” project with the UNDP. Based on the experience acquired during the work on the “Forum for |
Płock” project, the parties resolved to promote the idea of cross-sector partnership.
The project met with the interest of the authorities of Ostrów Wielkopolski, where in 2004 an “Audit of Sustainable Development of the Ostrów Wielkopolski Municipality” was performed. On the basis of its results, the authorities were able to update the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Town. Established in October 2004, the Grant Fund for Ostrów Wielkopolski became a tool supporting the implementation of the objectives provided for in the town’s strategy.
All the Fund’s projects subsidised by the grants were consistent with the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Town of Ostrów Wielkopolski. In the period 2004-2005, PKN Orlen and the Municipality and Town of Ostrów Wielkopolski contributed PLN 300 thousand each towards the Fund. The money was sufficient to finance two editions of a grant competition.
In 2006, the Grant Fund was transformed into the “Good Neighbourhood Grant Fund for Ostrów Wielkopolski” Association.
It is worth emphasising that the Association was established by other local entities, namely the Municipality of Ostrów Wielkopolski and the Municipality and Town of Odolanów. PKN ORLEN has provided financial support for the Association since its creation.
Through active implementation of its objectives, the Association reaches a wide group of potential beneficiaries, supporting also unincorporated entities. Apart from the grant competition, which enjoys huge interest each year, it is also engaged in educational activities, such as organisation of training courses and lectures.
