December 18th marks the first anniversary of death of Vaclav Havel, which will be commemorated with a film documentary that looks at the life of this outstanding Czech politician in the context of his both public and private relations with Poland and Poles. The film entitled “Our Vaszek. About the power of the powerless” was produced under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and co-financed by PKN ORLEN and its Czech subsidiary, Unipetrol.

After the outbreak of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, Vaclav Havel, a Czech writer and dramatist, became one of the founders of the anti-communist Civic Forum and as candidate of that political movement was elected President of Czechoslovakia the same year. After taking office in 1993 and serving two terms as President of the Czech Republic, he led the country to join the NATO and prepared it to accede to the European Union.

“Our Vaszek. About the power of the powerless” is devoted to the experiences shared by Vaclav Havel and Polish opposition activists of the period, starting with their meetings on the Czechoslovak-Polish frontier in the Giant Mountains in 1978, through friendships with Jacek Kuroń and Adam Michnik, involvement in the Polish-Czechoslovak Solidarity Movement, to incarceration and relations with Lech Wałęsa and other outstanding Poles. In addition to photos from the period, the documentary features interviews with Vaclav Havel's friends and associates.

The film was prepared and directed by Krystyna Krauze, a graduate of a film school in Prague, and produced by Media Kontakt. It will officially premiere on December 14th 2012 at the Ponrepo cinema in Prague and on December 17th 2012 in the Muranów cinema in Warsaw. “Our Vaszek. About the power of the powerless” will also be broadcast on TVP (Polish public television) and TVP Historia, as scheduled below:
