Will shale gas revolutionize the energy market?

The Evolution of Ideas about Shale Rocks conference starts today in the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. Over the next two days, world class specialists in shale gas will discuss the latest technologies and ways to extract unconventional gas, as well as the key factors determining the success and economic viability of unconventional gas development projects.

Global demand for energy has been steadily growing. The example of the United States shows that shale gas can play a tremendous role on the energy market. If forecasts prove to have been right, there are chances that shale gas will also revolutionize the Polish energy market and enhance Poland’s independence in meeting its energy needs.

The purpose of the conference is to analyse matters concerning the shale gas production potential and reserves given the latest scientific and technology developments, which is of fundamental importance for an accurate assessment of the prospects for any Polish shale gas projects. Among other topics on the agenda, the discussion will cover methods of assessment of shale gas reserves in the context of reservoir characteristics.

- Some of the best industry specialists focusing on shale gas will organize and verify our knowledge - said Wiesław Prugar, President of the Management Board of ORLEN Upstream.

Specialists in geology, geophysics and petroleum engineering from around the world have confirmed their participation in the conference. For the first time experts will share their latest discoveries in the area of shale gas, which may provide groundbreaking ideas for Poland’s activity in the field.

The event has been organised jointly by ORLEN Upstream, Energy and Geoscience Institute – University of Utah and Schlumberger Innovation Center, SLC, USA. The conference will be held under the patronage of Poland’s Ministry of the Economy and Ministry of the Environment.

Its history dates back to 1973, when the Earth Science and Resources Institute (ESRI) was founded at the University of South Carolina, with a primary focus in geoscience research in North Africa. In 1996, the original organization was merged with the University of Utah Research Institute (UURI) in Salt Lake City, which primarily focused on geothermal energy issues and with its new name, EGI has continued to expand both in applied research in hydrocarbons as well as geothermal applications for both government and industry.
