ORLEN poised to further increase energy asset management efficiency

The ORLEN Group is set to introduce Virtual Power Plant (VPP) technology to facilitate the coordination of power generation sources across the country through a central control system. In addition to facilitating collaborative balancing, optimising production and enabling reporting of individual generating units, the project aims to automate internal processes, further strengthening ORLEN’s competitive advantage.

ORLEN unveils its new sustainability strategy

ORLEN has unveiled its Sustainable Development Strategy for 2024–2030. The document outlines the organisation’s strategy and goals for minimising climate impact, promoting environmental stewardship, enhancing working conditions, fostering local community engagement, and embracing responsible governance. A significant element of the strategy is the Just Transition Programme for local communities in transition-impacted areas. The implementation of the ESG objectives is poised to enhance the ORLEN Group’s competitive standing, mitigate business risks, and foster the sustained creation of shareholder value.

ORLEN: EU funding secured for CO2 transshipment terminal

The marine terminal for the transshipment of carbon dioxide, a joint venture between ORLEN, Lafarge Cement S.A. and Air Liquide Poland, has received a European Commission grant for the preparation of project design documentation and supply chain feasibility studies. The construction of the terminal aligns with the Group’s strategic goals of reducing its own CO2 emissions and facilitating the provision of carbon management services to companies relying on CO2 capture and sequestration as the primary technology for emission reduction. Between 2027 and 2030, ORLEN aims to have the capacity to utilise or sequester 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

ORLEN embarks on construction of Central Europe’s largest green energy project

The ORLEN Group has reached the Final Investment Decision (FID) to build Baltic Power, Poland’s first offshore wind farm. The project, set to bolster Poland’s energy system through the addition of nearly 1.2 GW in 2026, will be pursued in partnership with Canada’s Northland Power. Baltic Power will deliver sustainable, accessible energy to an estimated 1.5 million households. The FID means that with all the requisite construction permits in place, all key components contracted and financing secured, the project is primed for execution. Moreover, as part of its ongoing efforts to facilitate offshore industry development, the Group has initiated the construction of an installation terminal in Świnoujście.

ORLEN acquires Poland’s first hydrogen-powered locomotive and commences testing phase

ORLEN has been consistently developing hydrogen technology for transport applications. The Group has recently purchased a state-of-the-art locomotive from PESA Bydgoszcz, making it the first hydrogen-propelled rail vehicle in Poland. Concurrently, the testing phase has commenced. As part of the operational tests, the locomotive made its maiden voyage between Gdynia and Hel. This marks yet another project aligned with the ORLEN Group’s hydrogen strategy to use hydrogen in rail and public transport. The Group plans to invest PLN 7.4bn by 2030 in hydrogen technologies based on renewable energy sources and waste-to-hydrogen technology.

New wind farms in ORLEN Group

The ORLEN Group has entered into a conditional agreement with EDP Renewables Polska for the purchase of three wind farms in the Wielkopolska region with a total capacity of 142 MW. Additionally, there is an option for photovoltaic development up to 159 MW that can be implemented, inter alia, on the basis of cable pooling. The farms launched in 2021 and 2022 can supply clean energy to as many as c. 240 thousand households annually. The assets being acquired are not only among the most modern, but also the most effective wind farms in Poland. They are powered, among others, by 4.2 MW turbines, one of the largest currently used in Poland. The transaction is expected to be finalised later this year.

ORLEN Group strengthens renewable energy segment

ORLEN Group plans further RES investments in the Poznań Province. Energa Wytwarzanie of the ORLEN Group has signed a preliminary agreement with Greenvolt to purchase a wind farm and four photovoltaic installations. The projects under development have a total capacity of 59 MW and, once the sale is finalised, will join the renewable energy sources of about 700 MW already operating in the ORLEN Group.

ORLEN releases its climate policy

The ORLEN Group’s energy mix until 2030, contribution of the carbon storage technology to reducing emissions as well as specific measures the Group will take to prevent and mitigate climate change-related risks are just some topics addressed by the Group’s climate policy that has just been released to the public. The document paints a comprehensive picture of the ORLEN Group’s approach to managing climate-related issues and systematises its existing initiatives in this area.

New locations for ORLEN Group’s offshore wind projects

The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure has announced the results of an offshore wind auction in which it awarded six new project locations on the Polish waters of the Baltic Sea. In the case of five locations, the highest scoring bidder was the ORLEN Group. As a result, the Group’s energy generation potential in offshore wind may soon expand by about 5,200 MW.
