Strategy 2030: ORLEN as a green energy leader and a guarantor of energy security in Central Europe

Two years ago, the ORLEN Group, as the first integrated oil&gas concern in CE, unveiled ambitious decarbonisation goals. Today the company is accelerating. In its updated strategy to 2030 ORLEN envisages an increase in investments in renewable energy sources, state-of-the-art petrochemical assets, raising biogas production volumes and an attractive offer of alternative fuels, including a significant increase in the number of electric vehicle charging points. The Group will spend a total of more than EUR 25bn (PLN 120bn) on green projects, representing about 40% of its capex plan to 2030. By decarbonising assets and reducing the use of fossil fuels the ORLEN Group will be able to further enhance energy security throughout CE, which is key considering the ongoing energy crisis exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The ORLEN Group’s updated strategy, in addition to ambitious investments supporting delivery of stable profits in a varied global commodity market landscape, also envisages a progressive dividend starting from PLN 4 per share. Recommended dividend for 2022 is the highest on record, at PLN 5,5 per share.

PKN ORLEN is staying in the Formula 1 paddock in 2023, with the concern beginning its cooperation with the Italian Scuderia AlphaTauri, whose main goal is to prepare future world champions. The ORLEN brand logo, in a record-breaking season of 23 race weekends, will be displayed, among others, on the rear wing, the nose of the car and the halo rim. This is the fifth consecutive year of the largest Polish company in the paddock of pinnacle of motorsport’. In the colours of Scuderia AlphaTauri will be Japanese Yuki Tsunoda and Dutchman Nyck de Vries.

PKN ORLEN and Sempra Infrastructure enter long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement

The 20-year contract between PKN ORLEN and Sempra Infrastructure provides for the supply of 1 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year from the Phase 1 Port Arthur LNG development project. The contract strengthens the energy security of Poland and the Central and Eastern European region. The agreed volume of supplies covers about 10 per cent of the current annual gas demand of Polish consumers.

New ORLEN service stations in Germany

The ORLEN Group is finalising the purchase of 17 service stations in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. The transaction will help the Group to expand its retail network to 604 locations and also to extend its geographic reach as most ORLEN service stations have so far been located in western and northern states. The transaction in Germany will be funded with proceeds from the sale of part of LOTOS service stations, one of the European Commission’s merger remedies. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of February after the Group obtains clearance from the German antitrust authority and other approvals.

ORLEN Group secures four new licences in Norway

PGNiG Upstream Norway and LOTOS Exploration & Production Norge of the ORLEN Group have been awarded interests in four exploration licences on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in an annual licensing round. Together with the latest awards, the ORLEN Group now holds 98 licences in Norway.

ORLEN expands its fuel station network in Europe dynamically

Following the acquisitions in Austria, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary, ORLEN's foreign station count has surged by almost a third over the past year. The Group is currently finalising the purchase of more than 60 service stations in Hungary. As a result of its rapid expansion in the retail segment, motorists will be able to refuel their cars at as many as 3,500 ORLEN locations across seven European countries by mid-2024.

ORLEN took over service stations in Austria

ORLEN has successfully completed the acquisition of Doppler Energie, securing a 100% stake in the company that manages 267 service stations across Austria. The transaction expands ORLEN’s network to nearly 3,500 modern service stations across seven European countries. The Group is now exploring additional acquisition opportunities in the region and is taking steps to establish itself as a leader in electromobility within the Austrian market.

ORLEN Group to increase its gas production in Norway

PGNiG Upstream Norway of ORLEN Group has bought an additional 19.5% stake in the Eirin gas field from Equinor Energy. As a result of the transaction, the volume of gas that ORLEN Group will produce from the field will almost double, to over 1.5 billion cubic metres.

ORLEN VC invests to enhance reliability of power supply to consumers

The ORLEN VC Fund has invested in Norway’s Heimdall Power, a global leader in providing solutions for optimised power grid operations. By directly monitoring the operating parameters of power lines, the company enables the assessment of the current line load and the detection of events such as failure, icing, fire, or high vibration levels. Data from sensors are also used to model the state of the network or plan the development of transmission infrastructure. Based on the technology developed by ORLEN VC’s new partner, the power grid capacity can be boosted by up to 40%, enhancing the security of power supply to consumers.
