PKN ORLEN investing to promote circularity

PKN ORLEN is always on the lookout for innovative solutions that can strengthen the competitive position of its business with a positive impact on the environment. For instance, as a pioneer in Poland, it is implementing the innovative ‘Blue Bridge’ project, designed to enable a 25% reduction in the amount of water abstracted from the Vistula River to support industrial processes of the Company’s Production Plant in Płock. Together with its project partner Wodociągi Płockie, the local water utility company, PKN ORLEN has signed a letter of intent with the State Water Management Agency PGW Wody Polskie providing for the construction of a recycling system for wastewater streams coming from the municipal treatment plant for reuse by PKN ORLEN. The project, which is in line with the circular economy concept, will be put into operation in 2025.

Baltic Power project driving new investments

Poland’s first installation terminal to be located in Świnoujście and a turbine factory to be built by Vestas in Szczecin are two new investment projects now afoot in connection with the Baltic Power offshore wind farm. The joint venture project between the ORLEN Group and Northland Power will require 76 state-of-the-art 15 MW turbines from Vestas, whose components will be manufactured at the supplier’s new assembly factory in Szczecin. The turbine factory, to be manned by a staff of up to 700, is scheduled for completion in 2024, while the ORLEN Group’s installation terminal at the Port of Świnoujście will commence operations in 2025.

First LOTOS service stations incorporated into the ORLEN network

The ORLEN Group has started rebranding and incorporating LOTOS service stations into its retail network. With the merger of the two companies, the size of the ORLEN Group’s network will increase to more than 1,900 service stations in Poland and almost 1,300 locations in foreign markets. There are already 7 upgraded service stations operating under the ORLEN brand, including in Rybnik, Konin and Turek.

PKN ORLEN implements remedies in accordance with the EC Decision

PKN ORLEN has signed an agreement to sell 100% of shares in LOTOS Biopaliwa to Rossi Biofuel as part of implementation of the remedies approved by the European Commission in connection with the closed acquisition of Grupa LOTOS. Work is also underway to finalise agreements with other partners. PKN ORLEN is in the process of building a strong multi-utility group that will be the leader of energy transition in Poland and in the region and will ensure stable supplies of energy for the economy and customers.

ORLEN Group launching new petrochemical product

In line with its strategic vision until 2030, the ORLEN Group is taking steps to consolidate its position as Central Europe’s leading petrochemical producer. At the Litvínov plant in the Czech Republic it has launched a unit for the production of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) – a compound used in the automotive, construction, electrical engineering, pharmaceutical and medical sectors, as well as other industries. By adding DCPD to its portfolio, the ORLEN Group has joined the group of its four largest producers in Europe. ORLEN Unipetrol’s annual output of DCPD will reach up to 26,000 tonnes. The cost of constructing the new unit was CZK 831m (about PLN 166m).

ORLEN Group opens new service stations in Slovakia

The ORLEN Group has opened two more service stations in the western part of Slovakia, raising the total number of its outlets in the country to 26. By the end of the year, the ORLEN Group’s network is to expand to 50 locations, and with the acquisition of another 41 service stations from Hungary’s MOL it will become a top three retail network in Slovakia.

Baltic Power secures contracts for key components of the offshore wind farm

76 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, will make up the Baltic Power wind farm. The Company has signed further reservation agreements with suppliers of key elements of the farm, including wind turbines, export cables and the onshore substation. The project is being developed jointly by ORLEN Group and Northland Power, with construction expected to start in 2024 and commerical operations in 2026. Polish companies are also involved in the supply chain for the project.

ORLEN Group develops new green business segment

The ORLEN Group is investing in environmentally-friendly projects to manage plastic waste. The agreement signed by ORLEN Unipetrol to acquire the Italian-Czech company REMAQ, a Central European leader in recycling, is an element of the strategic plan implemented by the Group. The transaction will help the ORLEN Group to achieve almost 10% of the 2030 strategic target for recycling capacity. Plastic waste will be used to make new petrochemical products for applications in the construction, automotive and packaging industries.

PKN ORLEN and PESA step up cooperation to build hydrogen-powered trains

PKN ORLEN and PESA Bydgoszcz have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to develop a comprehensive offering for public rail transport. Under the agreement, PKN ORLEN will provide hydrogen fuel and refuelling infrastructure for PESA-manufactured shunting locomotives and passenger trains. The cooperation will facilitate development of a carbon-neutral commercial offering for public transport organisers and operators of logistics centres, transshipment terminals and ports.
