Baltic Power secured contract for transportation and installation of offshore wind turbines

A company from the ORLEN Group has signed a reservation contract with Cadeler of Denmark for the transport and installation of some 70 turbines for the Baltic Power offshore wind farm – a joint project of PKN ORLEN and Northland Power Inc. In the next steps, the company will select contractors to supply the turbines, foundations, internal and export cables, to construct offshore and onshore substations, and to provide farm maintenance services. The project, planned to be executed between 2024 and 2026, will involve the construction of a wind farm with a total generating capacity of up to 1.2 GW.

PKN ORLEN evaluates a potential investment in petrochemicals with Aramco and SABIC

PKN ORLEN has confirmed it is discussing with Aramco and SABIC the possibility of collaborating in investments in various petrochemical business segments. An existing triparty MoU will be extended to evaluate a potential joint development of a large-scale mixed feed steam cracker and downstream derivatives integrated with the Gdańsk refinery. Moreover, PKN ORLEN and Aramco continue to explore areas of cooperation in the field of research and development.

Green fuel from ORLEN to power LOT aircraft

The hydrotreated vegetable oil plant currently under construction in Płock will enable PKN ORLEN to offer a low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to airlines starting from 2025. This innovative product will be made from used cooking oils. SAF offers a reduction of up to 80% in carbon emissions over the lifecycle of the fuel compared to traditional jet fuel and is suitable for jet engines used in aircraft today. PKN ORLEN and PLL LOT have signed an agreement on cooperation in implementing pro-environmental solutions helping to meet the requirements of the EU’s Fit for 55 package.

Poland's national grid can be powered by nuclear energy from ORLEN

PKN ORLEN is at an advanced stage of preparation for the implementation of the small modular reactor (SMR) technology. The Company has exclusive rights to use GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX-300 in Poland. The BWRX-300 reactor is currently the world’s most advanced technology on its way to commercialisation. ORLEN Synthos Green Energy has already applied to the National Atomic Energy Agency for assessment of the SMR technology.

ORLEN Group and Klaipėdos Nafta AB to join forces in offshore wind energy projects

The ORLEN Group’s ORLEN Neptun I and Energa Wytwarzanie have signed a letter of intent to cooperate with Klaipėdos Nafta AB, a Lithuanian operator of oil and LNG terminals. The partnership will involve preparation and implementation of a strategy for the operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms in Lithuania. This is an important step considering the ORLEN Group’s plans to engage in offshore wind energy projects in the Baltic states.

PKN ORLEN develops its petrochemical assets

PKN ORLEN is consistently investing to expand its petrochemical assets in a response to the growing demand at home and on the European market. The Company has signed an agreement to acquire the business of LDPE production and marketing from the country’s largest plastics manufacturer Basell Orlen Polyolefins, in which PKN ORLEN holds an equity interest. LDPE is a polyethylene product with a wide range of applications, used typically to make plastic films, bags, canisters and food packaging. The acquired production capacity is 100 thousand tonnes per year, which means that PKN ORLEN, as Poland’s only producer of LDPE, will single-handedly cover about a third of the country’s overall demand for the plastic.

Hydrogen fuel from ORLEN Group to power public transport in Kraków

Kraków is now home to the first mobile hydrogen refuelling station launched by PKN ORLEN in Poland. Hydrogen from the ORLEN Group’s biorefinery in Trzebinia will power the cells of a zero-emissions bus tested on public transport routes in Kraków. With a full tank, the bus can travel up to 350 kilometres. This is yet another project that fits into the ORLEN Group’s hydrogen strategy announced earlier this year. The Group is set to allocate PLN 7.4bn for hydrogen projects by 2030. Two more hydrogen stations available to all hydrogen-fuelled vehicles will open in Poland next year.

First installation port for offshore wind farms

ORLEN Neptun, the company responsible within the ORLEN Group for the development of new offshore wind energy projects, has entered the final stage of the procedure for the lease of land in the Port of Świnoujście. If the company wins the procedure, the first offshore wind farm installation port on the Polish coast can be launched at this location in early 2025. The facility sited in the Western Pomerania region, together with a second installation port planned to be built in Gdańsk, will be able to provide a comprehensive range of services for all wind projects in the Baltic Sea.

PKN ORLEN closing its merger with LOTOS Group

PKN ORLEN has secured the European Commission’s clearance of its intended merger with the LOTOS Group. Closing an important phase of the merger process, the antitrust clearance marks a leap forward in building a strong multi-utility group that will effectively carry out the energy transition and ensure Poland’s energy security and independence in terms of feedstock supplies.
