Biodiversity

Biodiversity forms the foundation of ecosystem functioning and plays an important role in both the environment and the economy. It encompasses the diversity of life forms and their interrelationships, which underpin the stability of natural processes. Its loss, resulting from factors such as land-use change, climate change, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources and the spread of invasive species, constitutes one of the key challenges of the modern world.

Our operations are associated both with impacts on nature and with dependencies on natural resources. Due to their character and scale, not all impacts on biodiversity can be completely eliminated, therefore, our actions focus on reducing impacts and supporting ecosystem restoration, in line with the mitigation hierarchy, that is from avoidance, through minimisation and restoration, to compensation. In practice, this involves integrating environmental considerations into the planning and implementation of investments, managing nature-related risks, and undertaking actions aimed at the protection and restoration of ecosystems.

LEAP approach to biodiversity management

Assessment and management of nature-related risks and opportunities across the ORLEN Group based on the LEAP approach, in accordance with the TNFD recommendations:

Locate

Areas of interaction with nature identified

Value chains of all business segments within the ORLEN Group, as well as assets (for which data were available), were analysed in terms of their location relative to protected areas, ecological corridors and key biodiversity areas (KBA).

Evaluate

Dependencies and impacts assessed

The organisation’s dependencies and impacts on nature were assessed using the following tools:

  • GBS® (Global Biodiversity Score®),
  • ENCORE (Exploring Natural Capital Opportunities, Risks and Exposure),
  • WWF BRF (WWF Biodiversity Risk Filter).

Assess

Material risks and opportunities assessed
Nature-related risks and opportunities were assessed using the WWF BRF tool in combination with the TNFD methodology.

Prepare

Response and disclosure approach prepared
Key and detailed objectives were defined, along with a catalogue of actions, a roadmap and milestones through 2030.

Strategic Documents
