ORLEN in the final of the Platts Global Energy Awards competition

ORLEN has for the first time advanced to the final of the Platts Global Energy Awards, one of the most important competitions in the global energy sector. In this year’s edition, the company has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Excellence in Energy – LNG’ category. The nomination highlights ORLEN’s growing role in the global liquefied natural gas market and recognises its consistent strategy of ensuring secure LNG supplies and expanding gas infrastructure.

“The nomination for the final of this high-profile competition clearly shows that, through the scale and pace of what we do, we are becoming increasingly visible on global markets and earning the recognition of industry leaders. We are an important player in the global LNG market. In just the last few weeks, we have received our 400th cargo of liquefied natural gas, signed another contract with Naftogaz for more than 300 million cubic metres of gas, and entered a new market by completing our first LNG delivery to Japan. We are stepping up our efforts in order to expand our LNG sourcing capabilities, in line with our strategy, and thus strengthen the energy security across the region,” says Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO and President of the ORLEN Management Board.

This year, thanks to the measures taken by ORLEN, for the first time more than 50% of the gas imported into Poland came from long-term contracts. Since the Świnoujście terminal was commissioned, the company has already received 400 shipments, importing via this route around 31 million tonnes of LNG, equivalent to more than 40 billion cubic metres of gas after regasification. ORLEN is currently using almost all of the terminal’s regasification capacity, which this year was increased from 6.2 to 8.3 billion cubic metres per year. As a result, the Świnoujście LNG terminal is one of the most intensively used LNG receiving facilities in the world.

The ORLEN Group’s LNG carrier fleet has expanded this year to six vessels and will grow to eight next year. Each ship can carry around 70,000 tonnes of LNG, corresponding to approximately 100 million cubic metres of natural gas in its gaseous state. This is roughly the amount of gas all households in Poland consume in an average week. In November this year, the LNG carrier Ignacy Jan Paderewski delivered 100 million cubic metres of natural gas to Japan.

Alongside ORLEN, the five other companies named finalists in the ‘Excellence in Energy – LNG’ category of the Platts Global Energy Awards were: Cheniere, Woodside Energy, Beijing Gas Singapore, EcoElectrica and Pakistan GasPort Consortium.

The Platts Global Energy Awards are among the most prestigious distinctions in the global energy sector. Organised since 1999 by S&P Global Energy, a key provider of industry research and global price benchmarks for oil, gas and fuel products, the competition honours companies, projects and leaders that shape the development of the world’s energy sector. Winners are selected by an independent jury of international experts, and reaching the final means joining the ranks of the most innovative and influential energy companies and projects worldwide.
