Biofuels

We are increasing the share of renewable energy in ORLEN’s fuel mix i.e. by offering products based on renewable and waste-derived resources.

We are systematically increasing the proportion of products based on renewable and waste-derived resources in the ORLEN Group’s fuel portfolio. In line with the objectives of the ORLEN Group 2035 Strategy, our biofuel production activities include the development of  an HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil) plant in Płock, a rapeseed oil pressing plant in Kętrzyn, a second-generation bioethanol production complex in Jedlicze, and a biomethane plant in Głąbowo. 

The vegetable oil hydrogenation (HVO) plant, commissioned at the production facility in Płock, is dedicated to the production of biodiesel from, amongst other things, rapeseed oil and used cooking oils, or a blend of the two. The plant will enable the production of high-quality bio-components for road transport at a rate of approximately 300,000 tonnes per year. According to our estimates, HVO production reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% compared with conventional fuels.

The oil pressing plant in Kętrzyn will produce around 200,000 tonnes of rapeseed oil per year, which will be supplied mainly to the ORLEN Południe refinery in Trzebinia for the production of biocomponents and biofuels.

At the Jedlicze refinery, owned by ORLEN Południe, a complex of facilities is being built for the production of second-generation bioethanol, mainly from straw, with a processing capacity of around 150,000–180,000 tonnes per year. In addition to bioethanol, the production process will yield lignin, which will be used to fuel the biomass boiler at the new on-site combined heat and power plant, as well as liquid organic fertilisers.

Construction of the biomethane production plant in Głąbów is nearing completion; this will be the first biomethane plant within the ORLEN Group and the first in Poland to be equipped with a liquefaction unit, enabling the production of bioLNG. The plant is ultimately expected to produce around 7 million  m3 of biomethane per year.

Other CE initiatives
