PKN ORLEN’s exploration success in Rzeszów province

ORLEN Upstream, a company owned by PKN ORLEN, responsible for its hydrocarbon exploration and production strategy, has made another gas discovery in the Rzeszów province. The gas was encountered by the Bystrowice-OU1 wellbore, thanks to the latest technologies in seismic imaging and interpretation of geophysical and geological data.

“Continued development of our upstream segment is one of the priorities which we, as a Group, consistently pursue. By increasing production and 2P reserves we will achieve a twofold benefit of improving the ORLEN Group’s performance and strengthening Poland’s energy security. Therefore, we will continue to focus on quality assets and the most profitable projects. The Rzeszów province is still a very promising area for gas exploration in Poland, as confirmed by our most recent exploration success in Bystrowice,” says Daniel Obajtek, CEO and President of the Management Board, PKN ORLEN S.A.

The recoverable resources in the Bystrowice deposit are estimated at 2 bcm of high-methane gas (with a methane content of over 98%). The field may be on production for 10 years or so. The in-place resources under the PKN ORLEN licence in the Rzeszów province are estimated at approximately 10 bcm. More accurate data will be available after sampling and production testing of all gas-bearing horizons. The Company plans to continue drilling within that licence area in the coming years in order to bring the field on stream.

Bystrowice is a multi-horizon deposit, consisting of several rock layers filled with high-methane gas. The Bystrowice-OU1 wellbore, located in the Rzeszów Province, has been drilled as part of the Miocen project. Last week the drilling work was completed after reaching the target depth of 2,165 m. Currently, downhole equipment is being installed to ensure access to two reservoirs at a time.

Bystrowice is ORLEN Upstream’s another exploration success this year, after the ones in the Poznań and Bydgoszcz provinces. Currently, PKN ORLEN’s upstream operations are concentrated in Poland and Canada. ORLEN Upstream’s average daily production was18,000 boe in Q2 2018, and its reserves were estimated at 152m boe at the end of 2017. In Poland, the company has joined forces with PGNiG to produce gas from deposits located in the Poznań province and is getting ready to develop deposits in the Bydgoszcz province.

PKN ORLEN’s exploration for hydrocarbons is an element of the policy of enhancing Poland’s overall energy security.
