PKN ORLEN investing to promote circularity

PKN ORLEN is always on the lookout for innovative solutions that can strengthen the competitive position of its business with a positive impact on the environment. For instance, as a pioneer in Poland, it is implementing the innovative ‘Blue Bridge’ project, designed to enable a 25% reduction in the amount of water abstracted from the Vistula River to support industrial processes of the Company’s Production Plant in Płock. Together with its project partner Wodociągi Płockie, the local water utility company, PKN ORLEN has signed a letter of intent with the State Water Management Agency PGW Wody Polskie providing for the construction of a recycling system for wastewater streams coming from the municipal treatment plant for reuse by PKN ORLEN. The project, which is in line with the circular economy concept, will be put into operation in 2025.

Baltic Power project driving new investments

Poland’s first installation terminal to be located in Świnoujście and a turbine factory to be built by Vestas in Szczecin are two new investment projects now afoot in connection with the Baltic Power offshore wind farm. The joint venture project between the ORLEN Group and Northland Power will require 76 state-of-the-art 15 MW turbines from Vestas, whose components will be manufactured at the supplier’s new assembly factory in Szczecin. The turbine factory, to be manned by a staff of up to 700, is scheduled for completion in 2024, while the ORLEN Group’s installation terminal at the Port of Świnoujście will commence operations in 2025.

Baltic Power secures contracts for key components of the offshore wind farm

76 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, will make up the Baltic Power wind farm. The Company has signed further reservation agreements with suppliers of key elements of the farm, including wind turbines, export cables and the onshore substation. The project is being developed jointly by ORLEN Group and Northland Power, with construction expected to start in 2024 and commerical operations in 2026. Polish companies are also involved in the supply chain for the project.

ORLEN Group develops new green business segment

The ORLEN Group is investing in environmentally-friendly projects to manage plastic waste. The agreement signed by ORLEN Unipetrol to acquire the Italian-Czech company REMAQ, a Central European leader in recycling, is an element of the strategic plan implemented by the Group. The transaction will help the ORLEN Group to achieve almost 10% of the 2030 strategic target for recycling capacity. Plastic waste will be used to make new petrochemical products for applications in the construction, automotive and packaging industries.

PKN ORLEN and PESA step up cooperation to build hydrogen-powered trains

PKN ORLEN and PESA Bydgoszcz have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to develop a comprehensive offering for public rail transport. Under the agreement, PKN ORLEN will provide hydrogen fuel and refuelling infrastructure for PESA-manufactured shunting locomotives and passenger trains. The cooperation will facilitate development of a carbon-neutral commercial offering for public transport organisers and operators of logistics centres, transshipment terminals and ports.

ORLEN to build hydrogen refuelling stations in more Polish cities

PKN ORLEN is going to build public access hydrogen refuelling stations in Bielsko-Biała, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Kraków, Warsaw and Piła. The Company has been granted for this purpose more than PLN 60 million in non-repayable financial support from the EU CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility. In accordance with its hydrogen strategy, the ORLEN Group is set to open more than 100 hydrogen refuelling stations in Central Europe by 2030. This year, the Group has launched Poland’s first mobile hydrogen refuelling station in Kraków. Next year, such stations are to be placed in service in Poznań and Katowice. There are also plans to build a hydrogen refuelling station in Wałbrzych.

Baltic Power secures contracts for production of foundations and offshore substations

Baltic Power has signed contracts for the manufacture, delivery and installation of the offshore substations and foundations for its wind farm project located in the Baltic Sea. As agreed, some elements of foundations necessary for putting in place the turbines will be manufactured in Poland. By the end of this year, Baltic Power will secure contracts for all the main elements of the farm's infrastructure and services necessary to timely start the construction, scheduled for 2024. As per the schedule, the joint-venture project of the ORLEN Group and Northland Power will commence to generate zero-emission energy in 2026.

Innovative systems designed to improve wind turbine performance and robotic solutions to handle industrial inspections are among the latest investments of ORLEN VC, Poland’s largest corporate venture capital fund, specialising in promising technology startups. ORLEN VC has also completed another indirect investment in Environmental Technologies Fund, a UK-based venture capital fund investing in startups with a focus on energy transition and future mobility.

PKN ORLEN evaluates a potential investment in petrochemicals with Aramco and SABIC

PKN ORLEN has confirmed it is discussing with Aramco and SABIC the possibility of collaborating in investments in various petrochemical business segments. An existing triparty MoU will be extended to evaluate a potential joint development of a large-scale mixed feed steam cracker and downstream derivatives integrated with the Gdańsk refinery. Moreover, PKN ORLEN and Aramco continue to explore areas of cooperation in the field of research and development.
