ORLEN Group launches production of plastics from used cooking oils

ORLEN Unipetrol’s Czech plant in Litvínov has obtained certification enabling petrochemical production using hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO). Partial replacement of crude oil with the alternative feedstock makes it possible to reduce emissions and respond to regulatory and market expectations. In parallel with the launch of HVO processing in the Czech Republic, the ORLEN Group is developing an innovative technology for hydrogenation of used cooking oils at its refinery in Płock.

The ORLEN Group refineries receive oil from alternative supply directions

The ORLEN Group has imported about 130,000 tonnes of Johan Sverdrup crude sourced from Norwegian fields in the North Sea. A tanker carrying the cargo has just arrived at Naftoport in Gdańsk. The ORLEN Group has also made agreements to increase the volumes of oil imported from other non-Russian sources. The measures taken fully ensure continuity of production at the ORLEN Group’s refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. They are another step in the process of oil supply diversification pursued by the Company over the past four years. As recently as 2013, a whopping 98% of the crude feedstock processed in Płock was REBCO oil sourced from Russia. Currently, the grade accounts for only about 50% of the plant’s crude slate, the balance coming from Saudi Arabia, the US and West Africa, and Norway.

PKN ORLEN to increase purchases of alternative crudes

PKN ORLEN has made arrangements to secure crude oil supplies for the needs of its refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. The feedstock is being supplied to these locations on an ongoing basis. When supplies from across Poland’s eastern border are discontinued, crude oil will be sourced from alternative directions. For example, PKN ORLEN has reached an agreement with Saudi Aramco to increase the volume of deliveries by five tankers. In addition, supplies of crude grades from the North Sea region have been secured for ORLEN Lietuva. The continuity of the ORLEN Group’s refining operations in Europe is and will remain unthreatened. This is mainly a result of consistent diversification efforts pursued by the Group for the past four years. Not so long ago, in 2013, as much as 98% of the crude feedstock processed in Płock was REBCO oil sourced from Russia. Currently, the grade accounts for only about 50% of the plant’s crude slate, the balance coming from Saudi Arabia, the US and West Africa, among other directions.

Final milestone towards merger of PKN ORLEN with the LOTOS Group

PKN ORLEN has selected four partners through whom it will implement the remedies negotiated with the European Commission as a condition for clearance of its intended acquisition of the LOTOS Group. It has thus achieved a key milestone in building a multi-utility group with a strong financial footing, ensuring energy security for Poland, as well as stable and attractive energy prices for customers. Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), the world’s largest integrated energy and chemicals company, has become a partner for the refining and wholesale assets and for aviation fuels. Saudi Aramco’s presence in the European refining and petrochemical sector, as well as increased oil imports to Poland, will be perfectly in line with PKN ORLEN’s efforts to diversify crude oil supplies...

ORLEN to invest in production of new generation biofuel

PKN ORLEN and ORLEN Południe have signed an agreement providing for the construction of an advanced industrial unit that would produce second-generation bioethanol and describing the methods in which the project would be financed. Located at the Jedlicze refinery, the project would be the first of its kind in Poland and the second one in Europe. The unit would be capable of producing 25 thousand tonnes of bioethanol per year. The project is aligned with the ORLEN Group’s strategic objective to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It would also strengthen Poland’s position on the European market for new generation biofuels.

PKN ORLEN’s investment in deep crude conversion in Mažeikiai will enhance the refinery’s profitability

PKN ORLEN is investing to expand its refinery in Mažeikiai. By the end of this year construction will start on a project to build deep crude conversion units enabling production of larger volumes of high-margin products. According to the agreement signed between PKN ORLEN and ORLEN Lietuva on the financing of the project, the Company is to invest EUR 641m. This will be the largest capex project carried out by the ORLEN Group in Lithuania in its operating history. The project will enhance the profitability of the refinery, contributing to strengthening energy security of the region. The project is slated for completion by the end of 2024, and it will add as much as ca. EUR 68m to annual EBITDA.
